Je me lance, vers la gloire

Around three weeks ago, I e-mailed the three partners I work for to tell them that I was taking off the first full week of April to go to Paris.  I didn't get any response.

Last week, the head of my office, who I don't work for, sent around a new vacation policy in the form of a casual e-mail.  It stated that henceforth, all vacations must be pre-approved by him.  I replied with the dates of my trip to Paris, which I had not previously mentioned to him since, again, I don't do any work for him.

He came by my office immediately to explain the new policy to me and asked if I understood it.  He said that we can't just simply tell people when we're not going to be around.  It has to be requested and approved.  He said that he would consider my request for vacation and let me know this week whether it was ok for me to take off.  Of course, my entire trip was already booked so I spent last weekend worrying about being told that I couldn't go.

I have no problem with the new vacation policy.  You can't have everyone taking off at the same time.  But the timing of the new vacation policy was not good for me.  I was hoping for some kind of ex post facto exemption, but I didn't get it.

Needless to say, he completely forgot about my impending vacation.  We never spoke of it again.  So today I'm leaving for Paris!  I will report back in ten days.  And I may not have a job when I come back, so I may have lots of time to write!
