The French are great with greetings. Whenever you sit down at a restaurant or even when you show up at a gas station, they start with "Bonjour monsieur" or "Bonjour madame." I loved the civility of it all.
Since I returned, I started keeping track of how people greeted me. In the last three restaurants, I was greeted with, "Are you ready?," "What'll ya have?," and the wonderfully succinct "Yeah?"
