For the first time in my career I signed up for a pro bono project. I always said that I was just a patent lawyer and I couldn't do pro bono work, but I decided it was time to force myself to learn another skill so that I can use my law degree for something I can be proud of.
I signed up to write a will for a poor senior citizen somewhere in New Jersey. I am still new to New Jersey and outside of Newark I know nothing of its geography.
The lady at the pro bono coordinating service said, "We're located in Elizabeth, so you can use our offices to meet with her if you'd like." I told her that I was planning on meeting the client in her apartment. She hesitated. "Oh. Ok, well that's great. We just find that most of our attorneys don't like to travel to Plainfield."
Plainfield? Having never heard of Plainfield, I thought that it sounded nice. I never heard it mentioned in a rap song. But if I don't post tomorrow, it's been a good run.
