I have been bragging a lot in recent weeks that my potato pancakes are now better than my mom's, which she made us once a week for dinner as kids. I came up with a new potato shredding method which makes the potato pancakes crispier on the outside.
On Saturday when I told my mom that I was making potato pancakes for dinner, she unexpectedly said, "Oh, I think I'll come by."
She came for dinner and the potato pancakes were not that great. I felt the pressure. I had the heat too high. They were a little too thick and a little too overcooked on the edges. Luckily, I made poached pears in kirsch and cream for dessert.
On her way out, she didn't gloat or say anything about dinner. I knew that I was defeated. She kissed me on the cheek and said, "That dessert was fantastic."
