When I first got my motorcycle, I got it inspected by Fat Walter on Staten Island. Fat Walter looked at the bike, turned on the turning signals, and then handed me an inspection sticker. So I didn't know what to expect when I brought it in to the New Jersey inspection station yesterday.
A young guy came out and said, "Nice bike. I have the same engine but I ride a custom bike. It's a Thunder Mountain. Put on those turn signals for me and hit the horn." I complied, and he handed me a sticker.
I am pretty sure I can get a tricycle to pass as a motorcycle as long as it has turn signals.
