My law firm shares a building with a few other businesses. There is a huge parking lot next to the building that I've never even seen half full. I'm pretty sure that a plane could land in that lot while everyone in my building was parked there.
There are a few spots in the lot that are assigned to my firm. They have the firm initials pained on the spots. When I started here, I was told that only partners parked in those spots. It was "an unwritten rule." So I never parked there. After all, they are not really any closer to the building than the thousands of other spots in the lot.
Last week something snapped in my head and I decided to take one of the spots just to see what would happen.
The result? I had to have a talk with the office manager at the end of the day about the "unwritten rule." He said that one partner got in late that day and had to drive around looking for a spot, which prompted me to turn around and look out my window at the hundreds of open spots. He said that the partner doesn't like to park in the back of the lot.
Then yesterday during the staff meeting, the office manager announced a new policy which stated that the reserved parking spots are only for partners. It sounds simple, but it was a solid five minutes of the meeting in which all associates had to have the policy explained to them.
Now all of the partners AND all of the associates are mad at me. I love this job.
